Data Storage Converter
Convert bytes using SI decimal prefixes and IEC binary prefixes as separate systems.
Exact defined conversion
1.048576 MB
1 MiB → Megabyte (1000² B)
Cross-system conversion: IEC binary → SI / metric. Factors are not silently aliased.
Systems: iec-binary → si.
Assumptions
- SI prefixes kB, MB, GB, and TB use 1000ⁿ bytes.
- IEC prefixes KiB, MiB, GiB, and TiB use 1024ⁿ bytes.
- 1 byte = 8 bits. Ambiguous “KB = 1024” is not offered.
Examples
- 1 kibibyte = 1024 bytes.
- 1 kilobyte = 1000 bytes.
- 1 mebibyte = 1.048576 megabytes.
How to use
- Enter a non-negative quantity.
- Choose a SI decimal unit or an IEC binary unit. The groups are separate on purpose.
- Swap to compare the same quantity in the other system.
Limitations
- Disk-maker “GB” marketing and operating-system “GiB” labels often disagree. This tool shows the definitions, not a vendor’s label.
- This is not a file-conversion or encoding tool.
FAQ
- Why is there no KB option?
- KB is historically ambiguous. Use kB for 1000 bytes or KiB for 1024 bytes.
- Does DevToolMage own this?
- No. Byte prefixes are measurement. Encoding, hashing, and timestamps stay on developer tools.
